Onboarding Screeb users

Screeb is an in-app solution to transform user surveys into actionable insights, thanks to a fantastic dedicated platform.

Our objective was to design an amazing onboarding experience for Screeb users.

Challenges

Throughout 2021, I collaborated with Screeb to create a platform to create surveys, collect and analyze user feedback.
We wanted to create the perfect onboarding to welcome our fresh users into the app and assist them in building their first survey.
At this point, we already had a functioning product. But like many others, it lacked a dedicated onboarding for new users. So what were our main challenges to consider?

  • As Screeb can be tried for free, we wanted a way to showcase how powerful the product was without prolonging the onboarding process. Users need to get things done.

  • We need a javascript tag or connectors to display a survey on a web page. It can be a bit technical, and the first user may not be the person handling the code. So how to offer an experience that allows users to ask for help or skip the process entirely without missing out on essential features?

  • Nobody wants to arrive on an empty platform filled with blank screens. Products like Screeb are meant to gather feedback. It means that until we get an actual answer to a survey, we don’t have anything to show to our users. Therefore, the experience can be deceptive, especially while testing. How to bypass this constraint and not lose the users in the process?

Ideations &
design solutions

As a first step, I chose to work on a basic user flow to determine how we could answer the identified challenges.

One of the primary decisions was to use the onboarding process to showcase the survey capabilities. Instead of filling up a monotonous form to answer basic questions like “How big is your company?” I proposed to use the Screeb survey to ask these questions.

Installing Screeb can be tricky for non-technical people, so we offered a way out by allowing them to send all the instructions to someone else.

To answer the empty product problem, we had to try two solutions:

  • The faster you create your first survey, the quicker you’ll get answers. So building it first-hand is critical to keep the user on the platform. Screeb also offers ready-to-build templates to optimize the process, reducing the creation time.

  • Offer a list of already built surveys with data. It means that users will be able to interact with them and get familiar with the product.

Takeaways & next steps

Onboardings are always tricky to design because there are many objectives to fulfil.

Basically, we want our users to work for us by taking the time to understand and fill our product while being happy about doing it. And most importantly, we want them to come back. Designing an onboarding is a never-ending process, as we have to adapt continuously.
